Born: 23 July 1989 Birthplace: London, England Best Known As: The actor who plays Harry Potter in the movies
Daniel Radcliffe is the actor who starred as boy wizard Harry Potter in the 2001 film Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and its sequels: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002), Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005) and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007). The films were based on the popular series of novels by British author J.K. Rowling. Radcliffe's first film role was as David in the BBC TV adaptation of David Copperfield (1999). He also had a part in The Tailor of Panama (2001, starring Pierce Brosnan). Radcliffe starred in a major London revival of the play Equus in 2007, appearing nude in one much-discussed scene.
In the United States, the first Harry Potter film was titled Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone... Harry Potter's friends Hermione and Ron are played in the movies by Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, and his young nemesis Draco Malfoy is played by Tom Felton.
The boy who won one of the most coveted roles in film history, young Daniel Radcliffe beat out legions of aspiring bespectacled mini-wizards to fill the shoes of author J.K. Rowling's junior sorcerer Harry Potter in the much-anticipated film adaptation of Rowling's wildly popular book Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001). Born July 23, 1989, in England, Radcliffe began to realize his love for acting at the age of five. Although his parents voiced objections, youthful enthusiasm soon won out and Radcliffe was on his way to stardom. Convincing his mother to send a picture to the BBC for consideration in an upcoming adaptation of David Copperfield, the precocious youth was quickly cast in the role of the young Copperfield, shortly thereafter turning up alongside Pierce Brosnan in John Boorman's The Tailor of Panama. It was his next role in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001), however, that would launch the young actor directly into the heart of the public eye. Based on a series of popular fantasy books that followed the adventures of young Potter as he attends Hogwart's School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the film promised to faithfully capture the essence of the book in bringing the otherworldly exploits of the magical youngster to the screen. A sequel, entitled Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002), was announced even before the release of the initial installment, and it appeared at the time that Radcliffe had found himself caught in the whirlwind frenzy of a phenomenal franchise. Indeed, time proved this assumption correct, as Radcliffe turned out one Harry Potter turn after another. All were blockbusters, and all well received by the public and press. In addition to Stone and Secrets, these installments included: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005), Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007), Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2008) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (2010). These specific installments, of course, mirrored the consecutive order of the Rowling novels and remained, for the most part, quite faithful to the spirit of the texts (though the events were condensed by necessity). Aside from a lead performance in Rod Hardy's gentle 2006 coming-of-ager December Boys (set in rural Australia during the '60s), Radcliffe focused nearly all of his professional attention on the Potter series. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide Radcliffe was born in Fulham, London, the only child of Alan Radcliffe, a literary agent, and Marcia Gresham (born "Marcia Gresham Jacobson" [3][4], a casting agent who was involved in several films for the BBC, including The Inspector Lynley Mysteries and, most recently, Walk Away And I Stumble. Radcliffe's mother is Jewish and grew up in Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex;[4] his father is a Protestant who grew up in Northern Ireland.[5] He has two dogs, Binka and Nugget. Radcliffe first expressed a desire to act at the age of five. In December 1999, he made his acting debut in the BBC's televised two-part version of the Charles Dickens novel David Copperfield, portraying the title character as a young boy.
